This premium and traditional craft, known as Zardozi and Aari embroidery or Adda Work, requires weeks or even months of meticulous handcrafting to create a heavy bridal lehenga. The process begins by tightly stretching the base fabric, such as premium raw silk or velvet, onto a large rectangular wooden frame called an ‘Adda’ to ensure it remains completely taut for precise, flat stitches. Once secured, the design is transferred onto the fabric using tracing paper with perforated patterns—like peacocks or florals—by rubbing a mixture of chalk powder and kerosene over it. Artisans then gather specialized materials, including gold or silver Zari thread, spring-like Dabka and Kora wires for a 3D effect, metallic beads, and an Aari needle with a micro-hook. Using the Aari needle, they first create a fine outline of the entire design before meticulously stitching tiny cut pieces of Dabka and Kora over it. To achieve an embossed look for elements like peacock feathers, a base layer of thick cotton thread is laid down before the metallic wires are densely embroidered over it, requiring immense precision. After the panel is fully embroidered, an adhesive paste is applied to the back to secure the intricate threads, and the fabric is safely removed from the frame. Finally, a master tailor stitches the individual panels together to form the flared skirt, attaches inner linings and stiff net for volume, and completes the outfit by assembling the blouse and dupatta with intricate borders and tassels.
